Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)

At Ercall Wood Academy, and across the Learning Community Trust, we strive to meet the needs of all our students.

Welcome to the SEND and Learning Support Page

“Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning, but also capable of succeeding.” – Robert John Meehan

At HLC, we take great pride in our reputation for supporting students with special educational needs. Our approach is focused on collaboration and ensuring that you have the support needed for success in all areas of school life. We believe every student deserves a broad, balanced education where they feel fully included. This means we encourage you to become as independent as possible in identifying and managing your own learning needs.

Our Inclusion provision is built around five core principles, aligned with the school’s ethos of achievement and wellbeing:

1. Relationships

  • Building trust with those around us
  • Communicating and forming partnerships with others
  • Finding connections and common ground with peers
  • Being attentive to the needs of others

2. Community

  • Treating everyone with kindness and respect
  • Embracing and accepting differences in ability, ideas, and culture
  • Taking pride in our shared spaces and achievements
  • Approaching others without judgement

3. Curriculum

  • Making learning accessible to all students
  • Supporting each learner’s growth from their individual starting points
  • Offering a broad and balanced curriculum for all
  • Promoting equity for every pupil

4. Metacognition

  • Understanding how we learn
  • Planning and organizing our learning
  • Using effective study strategies
  • Reviewing, reflecting, and learning from our mistakes
  • Celebrating our successes

5. Space

  • Recognizing the importance of time and space for learning
  • Understanding emotional stages and promoting self-regulation
  • Discovering and celebrating the unique experiences and talents of others
