Houses

The House System

A house system is a way of dividing students in a school into smaller groups, known as “Houses.” These Houses form the basis for friendly competition and teamwork throughout school life

Aims

The house system is designed to promote and develop our key values of Belong, Respect, Inspire, Succeed and Enjoy but also:

  • Leadership
  • Responsibility
  • Commitment
  • Loyalty
  • Co-operation
  • Healthy Competition
  • Discipline

Names and Identities

When Hadley Learning Community (HLC) first opened, both staff and students were invited to help shape the identity of the house system. Together, they chose a theme, house names, logos, colours, and other defining features. Given that HLC opened as a Specialist Engineering College, it was decided that the house system should reflect the theme of engineering excellence. After much discussion, four iconic engineering achievements were selected as house names:

• Apollo
• Bridge
• Concorde
• Darby

Each house represents innovation, teamwork, and success in engineering history.
The house system is woven into every part of life at HLC. It aims to raise achievement and aspiration by creating opportunities for students to participate, lead, and compete in various activities. These include:

• Sports Day
• Inter-house competitions
• Regular house assemblies

During house assemblies, we celebrate team spirit, individual and group achievements, and reinforce the shared values that each house represents.
